CO has lowest obesity rate in US; local health officials say not the full picture

Colorado has the lowest obesity rate in the country; 21 percent statewide, that's according to the Centers for Disease Control.

El Paso County Public Health says that's a good place to be on the list, but it's not the full picture.

Kathy Rice, the director of Planning, Partnerships & Accreditation for El Paso County Public Health, says they've been watching obesity rates increase locally for the last 15 years. They say more than half of all adults and nearly a third of children between two and 14 are obese in El Paso County.

Last year a group through the health department came together to work on those numbers.

"The first five years we wanted to stabilize things, not have it get any worse - that would be a great goal to accomplish - then over the next decade to reverse the trend. So the time is now; it's not getting any better on its' own, it's not going to and we know that," says Rice. She says one way they're working towards this is by partnering with schools and other organizations to serve healthier food.
