GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (AP) - Colorado Attorney General John Suthers says federal officials have no authority for the sequestration of millions of dollars from federal mineral leases that are intended to be used by states to deal with energy development.
According to the Grand Junction Daily Sentinel (http://tinyurl.com/meh277b ), about $110 million is being withheld from the states, including more than $8 million from Colorado, to reduce the federal budget deficit.
Energy and mining companies pay royalties to the federal government for the rights to produce minerals from lands administered by the Bureau of Land Management, the U.S. Forest Service and other agencies.
