Colorado law firms say they are seeing people scramble before Jan. 1 because of a landmark divorce law. Statistics show more than 52,000 Coloradans went through divorce last year.
The law creates a base line for divorce cases through a formula. The maintenance award is based on how long a couple was married.
Here is how it works. You can calculate support by taking 40 percent of the higher income earner's monthly income and subtracting 50 percent of the lower earner's monthly income.
Many Colorado divorce attorneys say they've seen a lack of consistency in maintenance orders, which resulted in unfairness and the inability to predict outcomes. Keep in mind, the formula is only a guideline for the courts. The final decision still rests with the judge.
