Colorado considers more physical activity in schools

DENVER (AP) - Colorado lawmakers are starting work on what could be one of the nation's most expansive requirements for physical activity in schools.
A measure facing its first test Monday would require all elementary school students to receive 30 minutes a day of physical activity - in addition to physical education classes. Last week Virginia lawmakers passed a similar bill requiring 30 minutes a day of physical activity in schools.
House Bill 1069 is up for a hearing before the House Education Committee. Its chances of passing are excellent; one of the sponsors is chairman of the committee.
Officials in many states have looked for ways to address childhood obesity through increased activity in schools. The Colorado version would allow field trips, recess and "fitness breaks" to count toward the requirement.
