Colorado teachers have won some concessions in a bill that would hold them accountable for the performance of their students.

Democratic sponsors said Wednesday they agreed to amend the bill to give teachers more of a say in their careers. Effective teachers who have been laid off would also be given preference in rehiring.

The bill is up for a hearing in the House Education Committee on Thursday.

Teachers unions are sharply divided over the bill. The American Federation of Teachers supports the version with the proposed changes. The Colorado Education Association, which represents 10 times more teachers in Colorado, still opposes it.
