Colorado libraries receive grants for computers

Colorado has received more than $2 million in federal stimulus funds and other money for hundreds of computers in libraries across the state.

Gov. Bill Ritter and state Education Commissioner Dwight Jones said Monday that Colorado has secured a $2.3 million federal grant to open and upgrade computer centers in 76 communities. The grant is part of $3.3 million for 692 laptop computers, 451 desktop computers and 69 computer stations in centers serving 2.3 million children and adults.

The funds will go to centers with a special focus on communities with limited access to public computers and high-speed Internet.

The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation is providing $754,000 in support and local libraries and organizations are providing matching and in-kind donations totaling $316,234.
