Colorado Recall Change Clears Hurdle

DENVER (AP) - Colorado's Senate has voted to remove arcane provisions in the state's century-old recall elections law.

But the Democratic chamber made the vote over fiery objections from Republicans.

Republicans accused Democrats of trying to change the rules after two of their own became the first senators in state history ousted in recall elections.

Sponsoring Democrats say the flaws were exposed last year when former Sens. Angela Giron and John Morse were recalled by voters and replaced with Republicans. Both supported gun control measures opposed by the GOP.

Recall deadlines set in the state constitution prevented those elections from being conducted by mail. Democrats say those deadlines need to be adjusted, but Republicans say the Legislature doesn't have that authority.
