A big crowd showed up for opening day of the new Cheyenne Mountain Shooting Complex just outside the gates of Fort Carson.

It is a unique partnership between Fort Carson and El Paso County. Fort Carson personnel are in charge of the operation, rules and safety, but it is open to the public. It has taken three years and special permission from top Army leaders in Washington D.C. to get the range open.

The 400 acre complex is now the largest shooting range in Colorado. It has seven shooting ranges with 120 shooting positions for rifles and pistols. Future phases will include facilities for shotguns and archery.

The public can access the range from just off I-25 at the Fort Carson Gate 20 exit. There is a daily $10 fee. The money helps with operations and fund the Fort Carson Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation program.
