Colorado seeks disaster status for 2 more counties

STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) - Gov. John Hickenlooper is seeking a disaster declaration for two more Colorado counties because of drought.

Hickenlooper's request for Elbert and Douglas counties is awaiting approval from the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The USDA already has approved primary disaster declarations for 17 Colorado counties, making them eligible for aid and benefits. Twelve more counties that are next to those counties can also receive help.

At a meeting Tuesday in Steamboat Springs, Colorado Water Availability Task Force co-chair Veva Deheza  told state legislators that 39 percent of Colorado is facing some form of drought.
