Colorado Springs scraps park trash cans

The City of Colorado Springs is trying to save money by getting rid of trash cans in neighborhood parks.

The city announced Monday that it's removing about 400 trash cans from 128 parks within the next two weeks. The city says eliminating the trash service will save $5,700 a year on trash bags and containers.

The city's Parks Department was hit hard in budget cuts this year, losing more than 3-million dollars and 25 jobs. Now parks officials are asking residents to help out by keeping parks clean on their own by taking trash home with them.

Trash cans will remain at sports complexes, regional parks, and special event venues.
