Colorado State University plans to add a 3.3-megawatt solar farm that could be generating power by Christmas, if all goes according to plan.

The university already has a 2-megawatt solar facility on its Foothills Campus west of Fort Collins that generates about 10 percent of the power needs on that campus.

CSU facilities director Brian Chase says the school plans to seek county approval this summer of its plan for the new solar farm. A private company would build and own the 14-acre solar farm, and Xcel Energy would sell the power back to the university at a fixed price for 20 years.

Chase says the project would save the university at least several million dollars over time.
