Colorado summit on stimulus spending

Denver city auditor Dennis Gallagher says the federal stimulus program is working, but it presents unprecedented challenges to auditors keeping track of the money.
Gallagher says most financial audits examine spending after the money has been spent. He said Colorado is one of 16 states under a microscope by the federal government and those states have to report before programs are completed.
Participants in the meetings in Denver on Thursday and Friday include the states of Colorado, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Utah and Wyoming.
Gallagher says the public has a right to know if the money is being spent appropriately.
Rep. Diana DeGette (D) says the nation would now be in a depression were in not for the $862 billion program.
Fiscal conservatives believe the nation would be better off if Congress had passed legislation that helped businesses, enabling them to create jobs.
