Colorado teen shot and killed during family hunting trip

A 14-year-old boy was shot and killed Saturday afternoon while on a hunting trip with his family in the San Isabel National Forest.

Investigators say it appears the boy, from Brighton, Colo., accidentally shot himself in the chest.

The teen was with his father, mother and grandfather.

The father and grandfather told the Chaffee County sheriff's office the boy had gone off by himself a short distance when they heard a single gunshot.

The family found the boy lying face up, motionless, the rifle across his chest.

Although preliminary investigation indicates that the victim's wound was self-inflicted accidentally, the official determination of the cause and manner of death will be released by the end of the investigation.

The victim's name is being withheld until all relatives have been notified by the coroner. An autopsy is scheduled for Monday.
