The state's largest school district is laying off 136 people, about half of them teachers, because of budget cuts.

The Jefferson County school board voted late Thursday to approve the cuts because of a $50 million budget shortfall. Eliminating the 136 positions along with reducing bus routes and cutting technology will save $14 million. The district will make up the rest of the shortfall by drawing on its reserves.

A total of 70 teachers are being cut. Assistant principals and secretaries will also lose their jobs. The cuts are being driven by a reduction in state aid. Overall, public schools in Colorado are getting $365 million less than they normally would - a 6.5 percent decline - because of the recession.
