Common foods can make allergies worse

When your allergies start up, you know the usual culprits: mold, ragweed and weather changes that stir those things up.

But there may be hidden food triggers making your runny nose and itchy eyes worse.

A plate full of fruits and veggies may be good for your waistline, but could have an irritating side effect.

Bananas, cantaloupes, honey dews, and even chamomile tea can cause symptoms for ragweed sufferers.

Allergists like Dr. Steven Cole say your body can read chemicals in foods the same way it reads allergens. "Certain fruits and vegetables, especially in the raw form, will cause them to have itching of their mouth, around the lips, tongue," he explains. "They even will talk about a tingling sensation."

If you're sensitive to tree pollen you may also be sensitive to almonds, apples, and carrots.

Grass pollen sufferers may want to avoid melons, oranges and tomatoes.

Seasonal allergies can also be triggered by beer, liquor and wine.

All three contain histamine, which can cause swelling and itching.
