Conference teaches group to become extraordinary firefighters

Firefighters from all over the country continue training in Canon City this week, to better prepare for wildfires. The trainees are here for the "Colorado Wildland Fire and Incident Management Academy."

Most of the training has been in the classroom, but on Thursday several groups went into the mountains for hands on experience. They learned how to make fire lines and shelter in place if they were trapped by a wildfire. "If firefighters don't know how to take care of themselves they can't take care of the public, they can't take care of the land, the can't take care of the job that's assigned to them," said Todd Richardson, the academy's Incident Commander.

More than 500 people from 23 states are part of this year's class.

Organizers estimate the conference will boost canon city's economy by about $400,000.
