The smoke plume you're seeing over Pikes Peak is a controlled burn.

The Colorado State Forest Service and Colorado Springs Utilities Wildland fire team are burning fuel on 100 acres between the North and South Catamount Reservoirs.

"All of the weather and fuel moisture indices fall within the prescriptions of the burn plan," said Eric Howell, Colorado Springs Utilities water natural resources planner. "While we are experiencing warmer weather in town, the recent precipitation and current weather conditions on the peak are right for this burn."

This part of the North Slope Recreation Area is closed until spring 2011.
