Copperhead Road Fined $5,000 for Liquor Violations

Popular Colorado Springs night club Copperhead Road will pay a $5,000 fine for recent violations of liquor laws.  It's part of an agreement with city prosecutors reached during Friday morning's liquor board meeting at City Hall.

The large night club and dance emporium located near the former Penrose Community Hospital at North Academy Boulevard and North Carefree Circle was issued its liquor license on October 11, 2009 and since then has already received notification of three violations of liquor laws.  Friday's fines are payment for the two most recent violations which include serving a customer who was already obviously drunk and a bouncer who harassed a customer.  That bouncer was fired and convicted in court.  Copperhead Road could've had its liquor license suspended for 10 days, but its attorney, William Holtz, and the city prosecuting attorney, Kyle Sauer, stipulated to the charges and agreed on the maximum-allowable fine of $5,000.  If Copperhead Road violates any more liquor laws, its license will be suspended at least 10 days and could even be revoked.  "Based on the overall circumstances, working with police, looking at everything involved with the violations, we felt that the stipulation was appropriate," Sauer said.  "If there's another violation in the next year, the licensee is looking at some pretty stiff penalties."

Early Friday morning, a 22-year-old Peterson Air Force Base policeman, Tyler Stringer, was arrested for firing his pistol during a fight outside Copperhead Road.  The bullet hit the pavement and nobody was hurt.  Stringer said the gun went off accidentally.  He faces multiple misdemeanors related to the incident.  The altercation did not factor in to the liquor board's decision.
