COS Metro Wrestling Championships at Doherty HS, Jan 24-25

Twenty-six Colorado Springs area high schools will come together at Doherty High School, January 24-25, for the 14th annual Colorado Springs Orthopaedic Group 2014 Metro Wrestling Championships.

All eyes will be on last year's defending champions Discovery Canyon, who have two wrestlers ranked No. 1 in the state in the On the Mat Rankings at 4A, Tyler Oberg at 145 lbs. and David Traynor at 195 lbs. Both wrestlers placed second in this tournament last year, but look to claim gold at this year's 2014 Metro Wrestling Championship.

The competition will begin Friday, January 24th at 4:30 p.m. the event continues at 9 a.m. Saturday morning with Session 2. The Championship Finals are scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m. Saturday evening.

The local high schools that are expected to compete in the tournament are: Air Academy, Cheyenne Mountain, Colorado Springs Christian, Coronado, Discovery Canyon, Doherty, Ellicott, Falcon, Fountain-Fort Carson, Harrison, Lewis Palmer, Liberty, Manitou Springs, Mesa Ridge, Mitchell, Palmer, Palmer Ridge, Peyton, Pine Creek, Rampart, Sand Creek, St. Mary's, The Classical Academy, Vista Ridge, Widefield and Woodland Park.

Discovery Canyon would look to make it two COS Metro Championships in a row. They will have a hard time doing that against Pine Creek who has won the COS Metro four times (2006, 2007, 2009, 2012). Other teams that have COS Metro titles are Widefield (2001, 2002, 2005), Coronado (2008, 2010, 2011) and Doherty (2003, 2004).

Joining Oberg and Traynor as No. 1 ranked in the state expected to compete are returning champion Justin Petrash (4A-285 lbs.) from Air Academy plus Fabian Hermosillo (3A-145 lbs.) from Ellicott.

A majority of last year's champions are able to defend their titles, such as wrestler Trenton Watson from Coronado, who was named last year's Outstanding Underclassmen and is currently ranked No. 3 at 126 lbs. in 5A

Other returning champions, with their own On the Mat state rankings, include No. 2 Jess Hankin (5A-132 lbs.) from Coronado, No. 2 Adrian Mack (4A-170 lbs.) from Discovery Canyon, No. 3 Downey Wood (5A-132 lbs.) from Fountain-Fort Carson, No. 3 Tracy Hancock (5A-195 lbs.) from Fountain-Fort Carson, No. 6 Brandon Supernaw (5A-160 lbs.) from Doherty and No. 8 Jacob Schoenberger (5A-285 lbs.) from Fountain-Fort Carson.

Returning COS Metro runners-up include Oberg, Traynor and No. 4 Procipio Valdez (4A-113 lbs.) from Mesa Ridge and No. 6 Rylen Thalhammer (4A-126 lbs.) from Palmer Ridge.

In this year's tournament there are almost 100 state ranked individual wrestlers. State ranked teams include No. 5 Discovery Canyon (4A), No.7 Pine Creek (5A) and No. 10 Mesa Ridge (4A) in the most recent mat rankings.

Individual medals will be given to the 1st through 8th place winners in each weight class and the top four teams will receive team awards. An Outstanding Wrestler will be named for the lower and upper weights

There will also be an Outstanding Underclassman, a senior named Outstanding Student- Athlete of the Year, Coach of the Year, Assistant Coach of the Year and Manager of the Year.

The event finals and semifinals will be webcast live on ( and on USA Wrestling YouTube channel.

USA Wrestling's national staff organizes and conducts this tournament on an annual basis as a service to the Colorado Springs area wrestling community.

Admission is free for those who have a USA Wrestling Membership Card, children under the age of nine with an adult, those who have a CHSSA Membership Card, and those who have a School District Activity Card.

Tickets can be bought for all three sessions or individually. Prices for the three-session tickets are $15.00 for adults and $5.00 for students (through high school.) For the Friday-night session adult tickets are $5.00 for adults and student tickets are $3.00. For the Saturday sessions, adult tickets are $10.00 and student tickets are $5.00. Ticket prices for the finals session are $5.00 for adults and $3.00 for students.

2:50 to 3:50 p.m. - Consolation Semifinals

3:50 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. - Third, Fifth, and Seventh Place

6:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.-Championship Finals
