Couple robbed at gunpoint at Monument Valley Park

COLORADO SPRINGS- Police are looking for a group of suspects who robbed a couple as they were walking in the Monument Valley Park Saturday night.

"They were approached by three males who had guns," Sgt. Paul Martinez said. "They demanded their wallets and money."

The robbers are described as being Hispanic or black and are all believed to be about 6 feet tall.

Officers aren't sure whether this was an organized crime or just a group of transients.

"There's a history of homelessness there," Sgt. Martinez said. "It's a very nice park but homeless people will use it as a camp site from time to time."

Avid bikers like Joe Spinelli have witnessed petty crimes taking place in the park and is asking for more to be done to keep the trails safer.

"Increase police presence," he said. "I've only seen police on bicycles once. I think that would dramatically help."

While officers can't police every park all the time, they encourage you to report all suspicious activity to them and be extra alert when walking alone or at night.

"Always carry your cell phone and a flashlight," Sgt. Martinez said.

Anyone with information about Saturday's robbery is asked to contact the Gold Hill Division of the Colorado Springs Police Department at 385-2100.

The victims complied with the robbers demands and were not seriously injured.

Police report the male victim had been assaulted and suffered minor injuries.

He was not taken to the hospital.
