Cruelty case could cost thousands

At minimum it will cost Pueblo Animal Services and the Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region $20,000 to care for the 34 horses, 31 dogs and a llama that seized from a Boone woman's property Friday.

This is the third time Valerie Harris, 55, has been charged with animal cruelty in the last 5 years. The animals can't immediately be adopted because of legal and health reasons. So, Jan McHugh-Smith, the president and CEO of the Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region says the best way for the public to help the animals is to donate to the shelter.

Donations can be made online to Pueblo Animal Services or by calling 719-544-3005. Donations can also be made to the Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region or by calling 719-473-1741.
