The hard realities of dwindling education budgets are hitting yet another local school district.
Over 75 teachers in Pueblo's District 60 received a verbal notice Friday that their contracts won't be renewed for the 2010-2011 school year. The district says that number is actually about average, as this process is something they do every year. However to help balance the budget next school year the positions of another 18 aides and teaching assistants will be cut.
District officials say this doesn't necessarily mean they are out of a job, they can apply for any open positions that come up, "Their name goes on a list and according to seniority, their placed in available positions they are qualified for," says Assistant Superintendent, Pat Gonzalez.
Both the teachers and the aides affected will receive official notifications next week.
