Damaged Cumbres & Toltec RR trestle reopens

CHAMA, N.M. (AP) - The full route of the historic Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad will be open for the first time in a year after repairs were completed to a fire-damaged trestle.

A work train made the first crossing of the Lobato Trestle about four miles north of Chama, N.M., on Friday. The first passenger train is expected to cross the trestle on Monday.

A fire heavily damaged the trestle last June. Repairs were funded by New Mexico and Colorado, insurance and train supporters. The cost was estimated at $1.9 million.

The railroad halted departures from Chama after the fire and bused passengers to Antonito, Colo., for a trip on the line's Colorado side.

The two states share ownership of the tourist train, which has operated for 40 years.
