Colorado's embattled Republican gubernatorial candidate is firing back at critics who say he's unfit for office.
A defiant Dan Maes told a group in Durango Thursday that the political process is surrounded by "evil." He spent more than an hour talking about the scandals that have plagued his campaign, including campaign finance violations and questions about his claims to have once worked undercover for a Kansas police department.
The Durango Herald reports that Maes called Colorado's campaign finance laws "ridiculous" and described his race for governor as a "spiritual battle."
Maes is campaigning in western Colorado in advance of his debate Saturday with Democrat John Hickenlooper in Grand Junction.
