COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.- The Colorado Springs Police Department is investigating a deadly shooting that occurred in the 1700 block of Monterey Rd. early Tuesday morning. A spokesperson with the the police department says the victim was dead upon their arrival.
The shooting was reported around 2:30 a.m. According to police, the victim was lying in front of Lawn Guys, a local business.
News 5 spoke with an employee at the 7 Eleven convenience store, located right next to the crime scene. He said he heard a loud 'popping' noise, and initially thought it was a blown tire. But, moments later, someone came running into the store, urging he call 911 because someone had been shot.
That clerk said before he called police, he ran outside to check on the victim. He was going to try to give the victim CPR, but when he got close enough, he said he could tell it was too late.
Brandon Lozano has lived in the Pikes Peak Park neighborhood since March. He said he used to work at the convenience store and still stops by during the early morning hours to visit his former co-worker and friend. He was headed that way when the shooting happened.
Lozano said he's not surprised about the deadly shooting, and he's considering moving out of the area.
"It's starting to be a daily thing now," said Lozano.
Matthew Peretz stood alongside the yellow crime scene tape for hours Tuesday morning. Not only does he live in the area, but he also works at the 719 Fitness and Training Center; it's one of the businesses that was blocked off while investigators combed through the scene.
"I hope that this is an eye opener for everybody," said Peretz, "and everbody watches out for each other. But it can't be just one or two people, it has to be everybody- especially in a situation like this."
The investigation is ongoing.
