Defense Secretary Robert Gates is planning to try to limit the number of gay troops who are dismissed from the military.
He's expected to tell a Senate panel of his plans today, while also discussing a one-year effort to decide how to revise the "don't ask, don't tell" policy on gays in the military. It's the first in-depth look at that policy.
Gates is expected to say he would use as much legal latitude as possible when it comes to implementing the current policy.
