Denver-area mom checking Facebook gets probation in daughter's death

AURORA, Colo. (AP) - A Denver-area mom who police say was checking her Facebook account when her daughter got hit by a van has received probation for negligent child abuse causing death.
Karen Pena pleaded guilty to the child abuse charge in August and was sentenced Friday to five years of probation.
Prosecutors say Pena was in her apartment on May 27, 2011, while her 20-month-old daughter was outside without adult supervision. The girl was hit by a van in the parking lot of the complex and later died.
