Denver mayor decides not to run in election

DENVER (AP) - Denver's interim mayor won't run for a term of his own after all. Former deputy mayor Bill Vidal took over after John Hickenlooper was sworn in as governor.

The Denver Post reported that Vidal said he wouldn't run for a term of his own on Tuesday, a day after he had e-mailed supporters to say that he would run. In the e-mail, Vidal initially said he would run even though Hickenlooper had thrown an "inexplicable temper tantrum" and was trying to stop him. However, the next day he said he wouldn't run, saying he had promised his wife they would go on sabbatical when his term ends in July.

Hickenlooper said there was a misunderstanding between him and Vidal. The governor said that Vidal had pledged not to run no matter what his supporters asked.
