Former Denver City Councilman Michael Hancock was formally sworn in as that city's new mayor on Monday. The Associated Press reports that Hancock plans to make city government more efficient in order to meet a $100 million budget shortfall. He has 60 days to present a budget to council.
Interim mayor Guillermo Vidal identified $75 million in proposed cuts prior to leaving office but Hancock will still have challenges to face including under funded light rail expansion projects and the search for a new police chief.
Former mayor John Hickenlooper, also a Democrat, left the city to become governor in January.
