COLUMBUS, Ga. (AP) - A federal judge in Georgia has sentenced a woman to six months in prison for trespassing on Fort Benning during fall protests calling on the Army to close a controversial training school.
The Columbus Ledger-Enquirer reports the judge imposed the maximum possible sentence on 43-year-old Theresa Cusimano of Denver in part because she's a repeat offender. She received a 60-day prison sentence for trespassing onto the Georgia Army post during protests in 2008.
She was arrested in November as about 3,000 protesters gathered outside Fort Benning for annual demonstrations calling for the closure of the former School of the Americans. The school trains Latin American military officers. Critics say its graduates have used their training to commit human rights abuses.
