Despite recent attacks, schools still safer

Since the Sandy Hook Elementary tragedy almost a year ago, it seems like a school scare happens weekly.

However, for the country's 55 million K-12 students, the statistics tell another story. In a new report out Thursday morning, USA Today says schools are increasingly a safer place.

Researchers say overall that the number of reported deadly attacks has dropped by 71 percent, from 1992 to 2011.

Experts believe the trend is playing out against a backdrop of jitters over school security.
