Dieting according to your blood type may help shed pounds

Barbara Sakota's been practicing homeopathy for more than 20 years.

"It's a way of life, we don't use the four letter D word," she said.

She doesn't call it a diet.

But for her, part of staying healthy is eating based on her blood type.

"I'm a blood type A which is more a vegetarian or carbohydrate eater," Sakota said.

The theory is laid out in a book by Dr. Peter D'Adamo.

He claims your blood type -- A, AB, B, O -- is a reflection of your internal chemistry, determined by your genetics.

"If your body is given the food it needs like a car with the correct gas or diesel it'll run extremely efficiently and you will not put on weight," Sakota said.

"I'm a very classic O in that I do best with fish, chicken and some meat," Cindy Lovejoy, Sakota's client, said.

Sakota says she develops an individualized diet, "So if you're an O or a B, you would want to concentrate more on the proteins, less on the grains. And if you're more an A or an AB you want to concentrate more on vegetables, lean proteins and grains."

Dr. Ken Fujioka, the director of the Center for Weight Management at Scripps Clinic, says while the theory sounds pretty good, he just hasn't seen convincing research.

"Unfortunately there's no science that shows that eating for your blood type is any better than any other diet," he said.

He does says any diet that encourages people to eat more fruits and vegetables, and less fat has its benefits.

Plus, "If it lowers calories then it's a good diet for anyone."

Cindy Lovejoy, for one, believes something about the blood type diet is working, "It's really working well and as a result I'm also feeling healthier and getting healthier."
