Signing Day has turned to signing week here in Southern Colorado. On Friday, day three, a local high school standout, picked a local college.
Alec Wirtjes, Discovery Canyon quarterback signed his certifiacte of intent to play for Air Force today, which is not as legally binding as a national letter of intent. Either way the Thunder stud is happy to be sticking around close to home.
"They've had a rich tradition of winning," says Wirtjes. "Obviously it didn't show last season, but I think it was kind of a rebuilding year, they had a little bit of trouble at quarterback. But once everybody gets healthy, and kind of grows up, I think they will get back to their winning tradition. And also, it's right across the street, can't beat that, that's always nice. And, just the opportunity to serve my country and be a part of something bigger than myself after college is really rewarding."
He's got protoypical size, 6-foot-4, so coach Calhoun has got to be licking his chops.
