The Colorado Bureau of Investigation has matched the DNA with a suspect who allegedly sexually assaulted a 14-year-old girl in Colorado Springs in 2001.
CSPD has taken 37-year-old Gerardo Garcia Cruz into custody.
Police say an Hispanic male had contacted the victim as she walked in the area of Delta Drive and S. Chelton Road, offered her a ride, took her to an isolated area near Hancock Expressway and S. Academy Boulevard, threatened her with a knife before sexually assaulting her.
The victim was eventually able to escape from the suspect when another car drove into the area. The victim was transported to Memorial Hospital Central, where sexual assault evidence was collected from the victim.
On September 16, 2011, the Colorado Springs Police Department was notified by the CBI of a DNA match to the DNA profile of the suspect submitted to CBI in 2001. Biological samples were collected from the suspect and submitted to CBI in November 2011 for final confirmation.
CSPD was notified of the the confirmation today.
