Doherty discus thrower shooting for state title

Colorado has been home to some of the nation's best discus throwers the past couple of years. The latest is Doherty's Jaden Terry. Terry shattered his school record and now he's going for a state title in a couple weeks.

The Doherty High School senior is the state's top discus thrower and one of the best in the nation.

"He's the best that I've coached without a doubt," said Doherty throws coach Andy Colgate. Jaden's had great potential since the time he was a freshman from the time when he first started throwing."

Jaden credits his success to following his coach's advice.

"If he tells you to do something, you really want to work hard at that," said Terry. "Hitting the weight room, making sure you're in there, and then coming out and practicing and being in there every day."

Terry can certainly pump it up. With a combination of bench press, squat, and dead lift, he's Doherty's first 1,000-pound club member since Lamarr Houston, who was just picked by the Oakland Raiders in the second round of the NFL Draft.

Remember Buena Vista discus thrower Mason Finley? His 246-foot throw last year was a national record. (Terry's max throw is 185 feet.) Finley now throws at Kansas.

Terry recalls throwing with Finley one time last season.

"He was huge, he threw so far," said Terry. So it's kind of someone to look up to."

And now Terry wants to follow in Finley's footsteps and win his first state title.

Terry is committed to Western State College next year, where he'll play football. Terry says football is his favorite sport.

The Colorado Track & Field Championships begin May 20 at Lakewood's Jefferson County Stadium.
