Double homicide suspect in custody, neighbors react

A suspect is in custody tonight for Monday's burglary turned double homicide in Colorado Springs.

17-year-old Macyo Joelle January was arrested in the 3900 block of East Bijou Street, wanted for first degree murder in the killings of Fort Carson solider David Dunlap and his wife Whitney Butler. They were shot to death Monday afternoon when they walked in on a burglary in progress at their home on Bassett Drive.

Although arrests frequently stem from tips from the public, credit for this arrest goes to the Colorado Springs Police Department's homicide unit. Police say they were so shaken by the senselessness of these murders that they worked tirelessly to bring justice to the family of the deceased. "This case was such a senseless violent crime that it really rocked our detectives to their core, and because of that they've been working around the clock since Monday to identify a suspect and ultimately arrest him," Barbara Miller of CSPD told News 5.

There were actually three victims in that homicide; the pair of newlyweds were three months pregnant with their first child. Dunlap was only 37 years old and his wife Whitney was just 35. It was mid afternoon when the couple walked into their home to find that burglary in progress; they were both shot and killed. Police canvassed the area and questioned a person of interest, but determined that person wasn't a suspect.

Police released the name and description of Macyo Joelle January on Wednesday; residents at the apartment complex say the SWAT team had been at the building three times this week to track him down. They finally succeeded in a swift operation, working carefully to keep residents informed of what was going on for everybody's safety. "They just told us that there was probably going to be a lot of gunfire and they told us to clear out of the area," John Ingham, a resident at the complex told News 5. "They said to just try and stay out of the vicinity until they clear us."

January has been taken into custory which comes as a relief to residents we spoke to; he was described as armed and dangerous.

Police also arrested three other people at the Citadel Apartments during the operation, but those arrests were unrelated to the double homicide and each person taken into custody had outstanding arrest warrants.
