BROWNSVILLE, Texas (AP) - Authorities in South Texas seized more than 25 dogs from a small home after a number of them turned on their owners while being fed.

Neighbors and others came to the aid of two women who were mauled Thursday at their Brownsville home. Sixty-three-year-old Josefina Ledezma and 51-year-old Estela Regalado suffered multiple bites and taken to a hospital for treatment. A city ordinance prohibits residents from owning more than three dogs. None of the animals had vaccination tags or collars. Twenty-six were taken from the home Thursday and officers returned Friday to confiscate more.

Public Health Director Art Rodriguez says the mixed-breed dogs will be quarantined for 10 days at an animal shelter to watch for signs of disease. He says any animal that appears vicious will be euthanized.
