Early turnout lags among Colorado independents

DENVER (AP) - Independent voters in Colorado are voting at a slower pace than Democrats and Republicans this year.

Early-voting totals released Monday by Colorado elections officials show that unaffiliated voters are way behind party members in casting early ballots.

About 96,000 unafffiliated voters had voted by mid-afternoon Monday - as opposed to almost 160,000 Democrats and about 185,000 Republicans.

The early independent voters don't make up even 13 percent of total unaffiliated active voters in Colorado. However, the Republican numbers equal more than 21 percent of active Republicans, and about 20 percent of active Democrats.

Early voting numbers include people who cast ballots by mail or went to an early polling location.
