El Paso County Sheriff shares thoughts on gun control

We sat down with El Paso County Sheriff Terry Maketa to hear his thoughts on gun control.
We asked him in the context of an Oregon Sheriff who said he wouldn't support any of the President's Gun Control Proposals, calling them unconstitutional.
Sheriff Maketa said if the legislature were going to enact a new law then obviously he would support it.
He thinks the approach being taken now is superficial and the focus shouldn't be on the type of gun.

"Let's focus on who's committing these crimes who's influencing the people who are committing these crimes what are the factors contributing to them that leaves them believing that human life doesn't hold that much value," he said.

Sheriff Maketa also said he doesn't think the state or federal government should take on any more work until they can handle the volume they have today, including the backlog of background checks.
