The fire in Bent County is estimated to have burned 9,000 acres since last weekend. And while it is 85 percent contained, it is still burning along the Arkansas River near John Martin Reservoir.
Fifty homes were evacuated near Las Animas by official request, another 30 homes were evacuated voluntarily. No structures were destroyed.
The fire spread onto the grounds of Fort Lyon Prison, but was stopped before it forced an evacuation of inmates. The prison is not threatened at this time.
Today 50 to 75 fresh fire fighters arrived from the neighboring counties. They came from Baca, Prowers, Otero, Crowley and Kiowa, relieving exhausted fire fighters who had been busy for up to 36 hours.
