A rail tanker car carrying hydrochloric acid is stopped on railroad tracks in Monument and awaiting the arrival of a specially trained hazardous materials crew.

About 250 homes are in the mandatory evacuation area. The evacuation area stretches along the railroad tracks from Blizzard Valley Trail all the way to Baptist Road.

On the west the evacuation boundary is Mitchell Road and on the east, Old Denver Highway.

Residents withing that area have been told to plan to be away from home until Friday morning. A shelter has been set up at Grace Best Elementary at 66 Jefferson in Monument. It can hold 100 people.

The tanker car is sitting on the railroad tracks just to the east of the intersection of Synthes and Mitchell. The leak has been contained. The hydrochloric acid will be moved to another container this afternoon.

The Synthes plant is closed.
