Ex-soldier charged in infant's death

A 2 month old baby boy is dead. His baby sitter, a recently discharged soldier with a 2 month old of his own has been charged with the murder. 23 year old George Peters made his first appearance before a judge Tuesday charged with first degree murder for the death of 2 month old Nicholas Johnson who he was babysitting. "The coroner has ruled that the child's death was a homicide." explains Sgt. Steve Noblitt with Colorado Springs Police, "The cause of death was complications from blunt head force trauma."

According to a police affidavit, Peters said he left the room of the apartment he was watching Johnson in on February 10th. He told investigators when he came back in the baby was unconscious. When police took the 2 month old to Memorial Hospital, doctors said baby Nicholas was suffering from brain hemorrhaging. Peters was originally arrested and charged with child abuse. But 9 days later baby Nicholas was taken off from life support. "The charges were amended for Mr. Peters to 1st degree murder." explains Noblitt.

Peters allegedly told investigators he was a regular user of heroin. When police investigated the death they also took custody of Peters 2 month old son when investigators say they found bruises on the baby's body. Police say Peters admitted to spanking his 2 month old son when he "gets out of line".
