COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The Air Force track and field team received 12 all-conference selections at the 2014 Mountain West Indoor Track and Field Championships, the league office announced Monday afternoon. By finishing within the top three of their respective events at the conference meet, which was held last weekend at the Academy's Cadet Field House, 10 individuals (nine events) and two relay teams earned all-MW distinction.
The Falcons earned a pair of all-conference honors in the men's pole vault, as sophomore Dylan Bell and junior Joey Uhle tied for first following a perfectly matched sequence and a jump-off that was unable to separate the two standouts.
Like Bell and Uhle in the pole vault, Zach Perkins and Annette Eichenberger used Mountain West titles to capture all-conference honors in the 800-meter run. With her second straight top-three finish in the 800-meter run, Eichenberger became just the second member of the women's team to earn multiple all-MW honors in an indoor running event (the first since 2005-06).
The men also captured all-conference honors from three Falcons that finished second in their respective events. Sophomore Patrick Corona earned all-league honors following a runner-up finish in the mile (just the second all-MW miler since 2006), while classmate Grant Hamilton became the program's third all-league honoree in the indoor shot put and junior Kobi Rex recorded his second all-MW award in as many indoor championship meets.
With a third-place finish in the long jump, junior Blue Kearney became the first Falcon since 2006 to earn all-conference honors in that event. The 4x400-meter relay squad of senior Josh Nielsen, senior Alex Lindsay, junior Evan McDowell and junior Jake Spuller rounded out the men's all-conference selections as they took third in the final event of the championship meet.
In addition to Eichenberger's victory in the 800-meter run, the women collected all-league honors from seniors Kassie Gurnell (triple jump, second) and Rachel Herald (high jump, third), who placed within the top three of their respective events. Gurnell's award marks the third straight year she has medaled in the triple jump, while Herald became the program's first-ever all-conference selection in the high jump.
The quartet of junior Taylor Drolshagen, sophomore Naomi Alston, junior Rebecca Esselstein and sophomore Hannah Everson rounded out the honors with a third-place finish in the distance medley relay.
The four all-MW selections by the women's team are tied for the most indoor awards in program history.
