Falcons Volkening named Goalie of the Week

USAFA, Colo. - Air Force senior goaltender Andrew Volkening was named the Atlantic Hockey Association Goalie of the Week as he led Air Force to a sweep of Army in the AHA Quarterfinals, March 12-13. The wins sent Air Force into the AHA Final Four in Rochester, N.Y., this weekend

Volkening blanked Army, 3-0, in the first game on Friday, stopping all 29 shots he faced. The shutout was his third straight in the AHA Tournament, dating back to last season's AHA Quarterfinals. Volkening's three straight shutouts and consecutive shutout streak of 236 minutes are both league records. On Saturday, he stopped 31 of the 33 shots he faced in a 4-2 win, including several short-handed, point-blank saves late in the game. In the Army series, Volkening had a 1.00 goals-against average and a .968 saves percentage. In 12 career tournament games, Volkening has an 11-1 record with a 1.47 goals-against average and a .931 saves percentage. In those 12 games, he held his opponent to two goals or less nine times, including four shutouts.

The award is Volkening's fifth of the season, tying as the most by any AHA goaltender this season. He has earned 14 AHA weekly awards in his career.
