Family of five killed in early morning crash

A family of five, including three young children from Southern Colorado were killed early this morning in a head-on collision in Missouri.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol says 30-year-old John Stephens was driving the car near Mt. Vernon and crossed the center line around 4:00 a.m. hitting a truck head-on. Stephens and his wife 27-year-old Lori were killed instantly. Lori's three sons, 7-year-old Harly, 5-year-old David and 4-year-old Tyler Pappan were also killed. The children were wearing seatbelts, but the adults were not.

The NBC station in Springfield, Missouri tells News 5 that the children all live in Ordway with their father, but were in Missouri visiting their mother and step-father.

The driver of the other vehicle involved, a 75-year-old Missouri man, was also seriously injured and airlifted to a local hospital.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol is continuing to investigate the crash, and say they still aren't sure what caused Stephens to cross the center line.
