The Colorado State Patrol(CSP) is investigating a fatal accident near Las Animas.
CSP says they found an SUV that crashed and went down an embankment Thursday morning, but believe the actual accident happened Wednesday night.
The crash occurred on US Highway 50, milepost 400, at the off ramp with Colorado 194, just east of the town of Las Animas.
A black 2002 Chevrolet Trail Blazer traveled off the right side of the roadway, across
the off ramp for Colorado 194 and collided with a guardrail. The vehicle traveled over the guardrail and
went airborne. While airborne, the vehicle collided with three trees, causing it to rotate ½ time and roll ½
time. The vehicle landed approximately 50 feet down an embankment on its roof.
The driver, 59- year old Roger Hazen of Aurora was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash by the Bent County Coroner. Hazen was not wearing his seat belt.
Speed is believed to be a factor in the crash. Hazen is believed to have been traveling near 70 miles per hour in a 45 miles per hour zone. It is unknown at this time as to whether alcohol played a factor in the crash. At this time, the State Patrol believes the crash occurred around 10:00 pm on Wednesday night.
