Father and son will have long recovery from fire

A devastating fire Monday morning in Colorado Springs leaves 44-year-old Tom Sabino with burns to his face, arms, side and legs. Tom ran back into the burning home on Chesham Circle to get his 10-year-old son, Tyler. Tom's other son, Sal, suffered buns when he put out the fire on Tom's body. Sal is out of the hospital, along with the three others injured.

Tom is in intensive care at a Denver-area hospital. He is heavily sedated, but family members see signs of improvement just a day later.

"He looks like he's doing really, really well," says Garrett Medlock. "The swelling on his face has gone down a lot."

Medlock's nephew, Tyler, will have at least half a dozen surgeries. His hands and feet are the worst. But, some hope comes from his hospital bed in Salt Lake City, Utah.

"He kind of came to today and was communicating with his mother and the nurses and stuff there," says Medlock.

The families who were in that house have lost everything, and with no health or renters insurance, they're starting from square one.

"It's going to be a long haul for everybody," says Medlock. "It's nothing no one can prepare for."
The families have turned to each other and to the community for support and guidance.

"It kind of makes you think about what you have and how everything can change in an instant, so you really appreciate what you've got," reflects Medlock.

The Colorado Springs Fire Department investigators have ruled arson and say the fire accidentally started in the garage.  They are looking into how the fire started.
