Feds say Westminster man made and distributed child porn

DENVER - A Westminster man indicted by a federal grand jury for making and distributing child pornography is now in custody. Gregory Lynn Hopson, 42, is a convicted sex offender who was serving probation from a 2000 case of sexual assault on a child out of Boulder County.

The indictment and arrest were announced Tuesday by Assistant Attorney General Lanny Breuer, US Attorney John Walsh and ICE Homeland Security Investigation Special Agent in Charge Kumar Kibble.

Hopson faces life in prison if convicted of any of the eight counts of production of child pornography. He also faces eight more charges for possession, transportation and receipt of child pornography. If convicted, Hopson could be fined up to $250,000 on each of the 16 counts.

The indictment alleges Hopson knowingly coerced a child who was under the age of 17 to engage in sexually explicit conduct specifically to make pornographic images.

"Mr. Hopson allegedly took advantage of a minor for the purpose of producing child pornography," Assistant Attorney General Lanny A. Breuer said. "As charged, this conduct represents the very worst in our society. We are determined to continue holding child predators accountable for their crimes."

Walsh, the U.S. Attorney added, "prosecuting those who sexually exploit children in order to produce child pornography is critical not just to put the predator in prison, it is also vital to protect the children who are victims of the production."

"Our Operation Predator program in Homeland Security Investigations was specifically established to identify and prosecute individuals like Gregory Hopson," explained special agent Kibble.

"Removing these predators from civilized society makes our communities safer, and give some degree of justice to their victims."

This case was the focus of a federal initiative called Project Safe Childhood. It launched by the Department of Justice in May of 2006 to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse.
