A kitchen fire has closed a popular Colorado Springs pizzeria. The Borriello Brothers restaurant located at the intersection Barnes and Oro Blanco caught fire just before 6:00 Monday during the dinner rush hour. The fire department says all 12 customers and 5 employees were safely evacuated.
Manager Jim Fiducia said the incident caught him off guard.
"We had a good day, a good afternoon, everything was fine you know beautiful weather, all of a sudden, just something backed up."
Fire Department spokesman Lt. Jeff Sievers says the fire spread from the kitchen to the vents and then the attic, damaging most of the restaurant. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
Around 20 firefighters from and 5 fire trucks responded to the scene. Sievers says the large effort was due in part to it being the dinner hour, and to the fact that the first engine company to arrive reported seeing a large plume of black smoke from about a block away.
He says they were pleased to hear that everyone had evacuated the building and that the restrooms and backrooms had all been searched.
"We always assume that there is somebody still inside the building," Sievers said. "But it's really nice to know in the back of your mind that somebody has told you that we have gotten everybody out and we have looked in each one of those areas."
Manager Fiducia says he didn't give it a second thought.
"We just evacuated the building immediately."
"Everyone was really calm about it,"said employee Vanessa Roggie.
This location was the second of seven pizzerias opened in the last 5 years under the Borriello Brothers brand. It was also one of the busiest.
The restaurant's owner says he plans to reopen as quickly as possible. In the meantime, they will refer regular customers to their other locations, most likely the stores on Research Boulevard and the satellite store located inside Lil' Biggs on Powers and Stetson Hills.
