The 4th of July weekend is always a busy one for firefighters in Colorado Springs. "We get a lot of injuries in the summer from fireworks." explains Lt. Kevin Bird with CSFD, "The one that goes off a little too soon that causes burn injuries or concussion injuries." As we close in on the holiday, crews will be out all over the city. "We'll be patrolling a little bit and getting out there with the public." says Bird.
Even the smallest firecracker can ignite a much larger flame. Add to that a high fire danger in the city right now and everything counts... even your grill. "A lot of times people are using gasoline to start these fires which is extremely dangerous. We get a lot of burn injuries from that." says Bird.
It's important to note that it is always illegal to set of fireworks in the city of Colorado Springs. By putting in a little extra work, fire crews hope they can stop a disaster before it happens. "We're out there keeping an eye on things and hopefully it keeps that at the forefront of their awareness so they're less likely to get themselves into danger." says Bird.
